I've been going to Sun Sai Gai Rice Shop on Canal Street for more than 35 years now. It is without question one of the best places in all of New York City to get a super tasty inexpensive Cheap Eats Meal, "Sun Sai Gai" can not be beat by any restaurant , food-truck, or whatever in the whole of New York for the great taste, quality, variety, and affordability of a meal. They are The Tops. I've had hundred of meals here. It's actually a destination for me. When I first discovered the place in 1984 and lived on Avenue A in the East Village, and still now living in Greenwich Village on the West side now, I always walk all the way down there to get a fix of their tasty Roast Duck over rice ($5.50), Roast Pig, and Soy Sauce Chicken, all just $5.50, and if you want to get three of these items, it's just a dollar more at $6.50 for 2 meats served over rice, you just can't beat it with a stick.

Sometimes I get a Roast Pork Bun as well as an appetizer for just $1.50 ... Of course you get Free Chinese Tea and water with your meal, so you don't have to spend any money on a beverage unless you want a Soda or Beer. Yes they serve Beer. One of my other favorites is a steamy bowl of Roast Duck Wonton Soup. This dish is amazing! You get a big bowl filled with some Roast Duck, a whole bunch of Wontons (Pork Dumplings), and steamy broth for just $6.50, it's an incredible deal, it's soul satisfying and quite delicious, "I just Love it," and have eaten hundreds of bowls of it over the past 36 years since I first discovered this wonderful establishment. If they ever closed, "I think I would cry." Seriously.

Sun Sai Gai might very well be the greatest deal in town for some incredibly high-quality food, at the cheapest prices imaginable. Check it!

McSorleys Ale House Ale for $5 Each

McSORLEY'S

SINCE  1854

One of New York & AMerica's Oldest Bars

McSorley's Old Ale House

New York

McSorley's Old Ale House, generally known as McSorley's, is the oldest Irish Saloon in New York City. Opened in the mid-19th century at 15 East 7th Street, in today's East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, it was one of the last of the "Men Only" pubs, admitting women only after legally being forced to do so in 1970. The aged artwork, newspaper articles covering the walls, sawdust floors, and the Irish waiters and bartenders give McSorley's an atmosphere reminiscent of "Olde New York". No piece of memorabilia has been removed from the walls since 1910, and there are many items of historical paraphernalia in the bar, such as Houdini's handcuffs, which are connected to the bar rail. There are also wishbones hanging above the bar; supposedly they were hung there by boys going off to World War I, to be removed when they returned, so the wishbones that are left are from those who never returned.

Two of McSorley's mottos are "Be Good or Be Gone", and "We were here before you were born". Prior to the 1970 ruling, the motto was "Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies"; the raw onions can still be had as part of McSorley's cheese platter.

McSorley's is considered to be one of the longest continuously operating ale houses in the city due to the fact that during Prohibition it served a "near beer" with too little alcohol to be illegal. In 2005, New York magazine considered McSorley's to be one of New York City's "Top 5 Historic Bars"

Who drank there? Since 1854, McSorley's has seen many luminaries walk through its doors for a Liverwurst Sandwich and a couple mugs of Ale. Who? None other than Abraham Lincoln had a couple ales at McSorley's after he made his famous Cooper Union Speech just a few feet from the bar. Lincoln was not the only President who drank at McSorley's both Teedy Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, as well as Civil War General and 18th President of The United States, Ulysses S. Grant drank a couple pints at McSorley's as well.

The writer EE Cummings and artist John Sloan who did a couple monumental paintins of McSorley's were known to frequent the bar also.

The $10 DAY

A TYPICAL $10 DAY

I actually have two main types of $10 days. Either a $10 a day or less on a workday and a $10 non-workday.

Let’s do the $10 workday. On a $10 workday there are actually two kinds within this category. There are they days were I work a double, by which I am working all day and all night, working both lunch and dinner. Then there are the days that I work just dinner so I have a few hours to my self depending on what time I get up.

OK, let’s do the day that I just do dinner and go into work about three in the afternoon. I get up around 11 am and usually just lounge around for about 45 minutes to an hour. I make myself breakfast that cost me around 60 cents to make.
Maybe I have some Ramen Noodles with 1 fried egg. Or I may make a Ham, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich, either way it just cost me an average of 60 cents to make.
So I have my breakfast, then I get my butt out of the house and 99% of the time I’m going to a café to have a coffee, sit relax, read, and write, sometimes I’ll meet a friend to hang out and chit chat. I used to, for year go to a caffe where I used to spend $4.00 to $4.50, double of what I spend for coffee now. Once I got my first laptop and needed to work on it, but the owner of this Italian caffe does not allow computers in his caffe. Really can’t say I blame him. Anyway, I was forced into going to Starbucks and other cafes around where I could get a regular coffee for about $2.oo, usually a bit more, and with a quarter tip, it usually come to a bout $2.40. After I while, figured out that by not going to the Italian Caffe where I spent between $4 to $5 a pop and I’d go there about 10 times every week, I realized that I was saving about $70 a month. That’s about $840 a year. “That’s a lot.” That pays for my Plane Ticket for my 1 big vacation a year.” That’s good! Anyway, have
60 cents for breakfast and $2.40 for my coffee, that’s $3.00 so far. I take the Subway to work, which with my discount cost me $1.75, so now we’re up we are up to $4.75.
Most of the time I’ll take the subway home, I often walk home which cost me a Big Zero, nothing, and I usually take a cab home tow nights a week, so I have to average out what it cost me to travel back home after work in the evening. The average is $3.25. We are now up to $8.00 on days that I work just for dinner.

Now to the days that I do a double, working lunch and dinner. These days I usually treat myself to a coffee and either a Bagel or Buttered Roll which cost me just $2.00 for both. It’s $1.75 for the Subway so, I’ve started up the morning spending $3.75.
I always have to take a little break on the days I do a double. About 3:30 or 4:00 I go to the café for a coffee for about 45 minutes. The coffee is about $2.25, so we’re up to $6.00 for the day. I usually always take the Subway home or even walk when I do a double as I don’t get out too late. We’re up to $7.75 for the day.

So on the days I work, I average $8.00 on the days I just work dinner and $7.75 on the days I do a double. Wow I didn’t relieve that it’s just about $8.00 each day, $7.75 for the one type of day and $8.00 for the other. Let’s just say it averages to $8.00 even. So I spend even $2.00 less each day. I have a extra $10 to spend on the weekend if I want, so I can actually spend $30 on my two days off, or $15 for each of those two days.

My days off. Typically the day will start off with me having a 60 cents breakfast at home. On my days off, I usually have 3 coffees at my café stops for a total of $7.00.
That’s $7.60 so far. I can spend another $7.40 if I want. Usually I’ll have two very small meals at home which cost me, lets say $1.30. That’s $8.90. I usually eat about $1.10 worth of sweet that I bought at The 99 Cent Store or the supermarket, or CVS. I’m up to $11.00. Now, I might go somewhere on my day off whereby I need to take the Subway, but this is usually 1 days out of five so if a round-trip on the Subway cost me $3.50 and I divide that by 5, it comes to an average Subway expenditure on my days off to .70 cents. We are now up $11.70 on my day off and I have $3.30 left to spend. Sometimes I’ll treat myself to 2 McDonald’s Cheeseburgers which cost me $3.05. Sometimes I’ll go and get 2 orders of the delicious Pork Dumplings at Dumpling House, this cost me $2.00. other times I’ll get a Hotdog at Papayadog for $1.25, so my average for these treats is $2.01. So my average expenditure on my days off is $13.71. I spend $13.01 two days a week and $8.00 five days a week for a total on the week of just $66.02 for a whole week, for Food, Transportation, and Entertainment. That’s an average of $9.43 cents a day.
Fifty-seven cents a day under the $10 a day average. Multiply the .57 cents by 30 days and you have $17.10 left to socialize with. I usually go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art once a month and give a $2.00 donation. I now have $15.0 extra to do with whatever I want.

Well, I guess I really can’t live on just $10 a day all the time, but I would estimate that I do it about 250 in a year, which is quite great. Not including housing or clothes, I spend just $2,500 a year in 250 days time. The other days I may spend substantially more, but never throwing my money away or insane expenditures. The average person who is pretty much in the same financial bracket as me (not much) may spend 3 ½ times that $10 a day I spend at least 250 days a year, and even $35 a day is not too much to spend at all. So they probably spend about $8,750, which is not a lot of money to spend for food, transportation and recreation for 250. I spend about $6,250 less in a year for those same 250 days. That’s Money In my Pockets, $6,250 to do with what I want. This is my vacation money, money to take a least 1 other small trip a year, usually to New Orleans to meet up with my brother, and still have maybe $2,000 to put in the bank. Now that’s good! Wouldn’t you say?

Do You Want to Live on 10 20 30 40 a Day or More?

NOT $10 EVERYDAY

Living on $10 a Day. Doesn’t mean that you have to do it everyday. You can, and some will. Everybody is different. We are all individuals, and we will all use this in a different way. Some will do it everyday, really getting “Into It,” maybe even trying to get it down to an average of $6 or $7 a day, which can defiantly be done. Some may just want to do the $10 a Day thing just 2 or 3 times a week. That’s cool. That’s 100 to 150 a year, and if you do $10 a day for either 100 or 150 times a year, you will save quite a lot , thousands. Not as much as if you did it 250 or 300 times a year, but still quite a lot. Doing it more than the other guy is not what this is about. What this is all about, is saving money in the way it works for you. Some may read the Blogs and follow a lot of the great info and advice and apply these principles and methods like “Brown Bagging” and Cooking at home.

For some people they may not Brown Bag because they feel self-conscious or embarrassed as it concerns their life and where they work. Remember, everybody is different. What works for one, may not work for another. This particular person may choose not “Brown Bag It.” (and keep in mind, there is nothing wrong with Brown Bagging, it’s Great Actually, just not for everybody) So this person doesn’t Brown Bag It because he chooses not to, but he shops, buys, and saves a lot of Money every week at 99 Cent Stores, he cooks at home a lot, doesn’t go out to eat much except for lunch during the work week, he’s a good shopper and gets the best deals on good clothes, Airline Tickets, and everything else he buys, and buy doing these things, he has saved himself three or four thousand of dollars a year, maybe more. And he could have even saved more if he Brown Bagged It, but he didn’t want to. He save thousands in other ways, and put thousands in his pockets through being smart and saving. “Money Saved is Money Earned.”

This guys saved thousands of dollars in one years time buy being frugal in many ways. He did not throw his Money away. He shopped every week at the 99 Cent Store buying all sorts of food items like Ramen, cheese, Ham, Salami, bread, Glass Cleaner, cookies, pretzels, all sorts of things. He spent $1,700 that year at 99 Cent Stores. If he bought all those items at Supermarkets and other stores instead of the 99 Cent Store, he would have spent about $5,700. He saved $4,000 dollars, What do you think he did. With that $4,000? He took the vacation he had always wanted and dreamed of taking. He went to Italy for two weeks. The money that he saved just by shopping at the 99 Cent Store, paid for his vacation to Italy. It can pay for yours too. And in actuality, the money he save by shopping at the 99 Cent Store was really quite a bit more. He cooked a lot of meals at home, especially breakfast and dinner. Before he used to spend about $15 dollars a week on breakfast or about $750 a year.
He used to spend an average of $125 a week buying take out for dinner and going out to eat. That’s about $6,300 a year on dinner. He still went out to eat once and a while, but a lot less, and he almost completely cut out take-out for dinner. He was spending $7,000 a year on Breakfast and Dinner, not including lunches. He cut this figure down to $3,000, saving another $4,000 and of that you apply $2,000 savings of the money Saved (Earned) by shopping at 99 Cent Stores because he was eating most of his breakfasts and dinners at home instead of out or take-out, so the Money he actually Saved (Earned) by shopping 99 Cent Stores was actually $6,000, so he was able to pay for the entire trip to Italy, even with the crazy price of buying Euros, and he still had a little left over, enough to buy some nice Italian Shirts and shoes. That’s what shopping at 99 Cent Stores and all sorts of smart shopping can do for you. That’s what “Brown Bagging It” and cooking at home can do.
“Do it Yourself and Save. “ Do it and Earn Money, “Money Saved is Money Earned, “ and it will pay for a beautiful Vacation for you to Italy, Paris, Asia, where ever you dream of going to. And on top of that, you will have money to buy nice clothes (discounted of course), and you’ll be able to put thousands of dollars in you Savings Account.
“How’s that? Great right? Good Luck, you can do it too!”

If you're doing the $10 or $20 a Day, Coney Island is a Great Place to go for the day for a weekend day-off of Entertainment.
